For a long time research and data on domestic violence were missing entirely . In 1996 , the women's association " Reflections " , organized the first national study on domestic violence , financed by PHARE Democracy Program . Miria S. In this study provides the first data showing that 64 % ( from 849 women ) of the women interviewed admitted to have experienced physical, emotional and sexual . 64 % of women interviewed admitted that they felt physically or spiritually abused by their partner or other family members ... 35 % of the intervistuarvekanë witnessed serious physical and psychological abuse in their family 's origjinës.Permasat this problem can be understood by taking into account data from the Counselling tëtjera for Women and Girls . In less than five years of its existence , the Centre has received more than 5,000 calls . In the period 1996-2000 , more than 400gr are face to face counseling . The clients come from all regions of the country . Another fact about the frequency of the phenomenon is the number of clients served by the Shelter for Abused Women and Girls in a period shorter than two years . This shelter in Tirana , is the only one of its kind in Albania and supported by foreign donors . About 32 women and 40 children were treated at the shelter at 18 months activity . Requests for accommodations are much larger than its capacity Shelter . The shelter almost every month one or two clients beyond its capacity . The number of cases overturned (not approved ) is almost equal to the number of clients served by the shelter . These data help us to understand that violence against women does not happen by chance , but it is a widespread phenomenon in Albania . It includes all ages and religious beliefs .
